Fearless and fascinating
"This play and performance "read" and "see" you as much as you read or see it. That's due to the elegant and layered writing, the thoughtful and brave performances, and a production that leaves no detail unconsidered. In touching both the intellectual and the emotive, it's an experience that accomplishes what many productions aim for but so few achieve. The ideas one leaves with are as thought-provoking as they are felt--resonating far longer for both. Days later, you'll find yourself turning over a gesture, a line, a scene, finding more meaning and therefore more insight into those mysteries we need art to nudge closer into our reach. None of this is possible without the clear time and effort on the part of everyone involved to burrow into this work--that kind of hard labor is ironically what makes the play seem so profoundly natural, almost effortless. These folks have put in the work. And so the work--and we--are transformed. "

Not to be missed
"Great acting; Interesting Update of a classic play. All of the actors but particularly Mark Strong were superb. The update of the play was interesting and really worked although for the life of me I didn't get final scene in the apartment. Lesley Manville was also excellent and the production was interesting technically with the countdown and TV screens. And the audience was totally into it-no phones no talking-a pleasure."

Not for everyone
"The performance was amazing, especially those of Lesley Manville and Mark Strong. Even knowing the Greek Tragedy could not prepare you for the modern and astonishing way the story unfolded. I noticed how "spent" the cast was at the curtain call. I felt privileged to see witness this play."

Even though you know the end, you are still riveted.
"The acting was superb. I liked the fact that Jocasta played a much more significant role than in the original play. The relationship between Oedipus and Jocasta made the play more balanced. The children of Oedipus didn't add much to the story."

Simply what theatre should be
"Incredible performances with perfect set and clever modernizing. Lesley Manville & Mark Strong took my breath away. Always love Anne Reid - wonderful to see her on stage. Only small criticism is I would leave out the epilogue. The power of the show's ending in silence & darkness should be the only thing the audience leaves with. The show stays with you - follow it up with something light."

"Oedipus was truly moving. The lead actors worked off each other, building heat and intensity toward the inevitable, but believable climax. Both gave inspired performances. I was delighted to get to see them at their best. "

Sophocles would have approved....
"Mesmerizing, unsettling, everything I hoped for in this modern interpretation of Oedipus. I have never before been to a performance which was so intense; everyone was captured in the tragedy unfolding on the stage. The actors were perfect in their roles. Loved every single minute of it; even my husband, who was not so familiar with the story of Oedipus. "
